Alternative currents and voltages

Periodic alternating voltage and its properties

1) Period

When we represent the variations in the voltage as a function of time and that a part of the curve is repeated regularly then:
- The voltage is said periodic.
- The smallest part that repeats is called an elementary pattern.

This periodic voltage is characterized by its period:
The period is denoted with symbol T, its unit is the second, and it corresponds to the duration of an elementary pattern.

Example of a periodic sinusoidal alternating voltage

Period of an alternating voltage

Comment: a sinusoidal curve corresponds to the mathematical function sinus.

2) Maximum voltage and minimum voltage

The maximum and minimum voltages are respectively denoted Umax and Umin. They correspond to the the highest voltage and the the lowest voltage in an elementary pattern.

Example of a periodic sinusoidal alternating voltage

Maximum and minimu voltage

For a periodic sinusoidal alternating voltage the maximum and minimum voltages corresponding to voltages peaks of the curve.
